Children of Bodom Blooddrunk (2007–present)

From October to December 2007, Children of Bodom recorded their sixth studio album, entitled Blooddrunk,^[10] which was released on April 15, 2008.^[11] The album contained 10 songs with one of them being a cover song. Children of Bodom were featured on the Gigantour 2008 North American tour with Megadeth, In Flames, Job for a Cowboy and High on Fire.^[12]

Children of Bodom were one of the first bands to be confirmed for Wacken Open Air 2008, where they performed alongside many bands including Iron Maiden, Sonata Arctica and Avantasia.^[13] Children of Bodom played at Donington Download on the 15th of June, playing a mixture of old and new songs. On March 8, 2008, Children of Bodom did their first ever UK signing event at the Zavvi music shop in Oxford Street, London. They signed copies of their new single "Blooddrunk" in CD, 7 inch and 12 inch vinyls,^[14] only 666 copies of the 12 inch vinyls have been made.^[15]

On 26 June 2008, Children of Bodom played their first show in Auckland, New Zealand with support from local scene acts Dawn of Azazel and Subtract, at the Transmission Room.^[16] In 2008, Children of Bodom's first three studio albums, as well as Tokyo Warhearts, were remastered and re-released with bonus tracks. In September and October 2008, the band toured the USA supporting Blooddrunk, with support from The Black Dahlia Murder and Between the Buried and Me. Testament also made a special guest appearance in the main support slot at the tour's New York City date.

In November and December 2008, the band toured in Europe supporting Slipknot and Machine Head. From late January to early March 2009, the band also co-headlined the European tour with Cannibal Corpse with Diablo opening for them. On April 2, 2009, Children of Bodom embarked on the No Fear Energy Tour headlined by Lamb of God with main support from As I Lay Dying and themselves, and rotating opening slots with God Forbid and Municipal Waste.^[17]

In February 2009, Children of Bodom hinted at plans to release a cover album entitled Skeletons in the Closet in September 2009.^[18] They also admitted to being "lazy" when it comes to practicing and talked about plans to have more songs on future albums.^[19]

Children of Bodom Something Wild (1997–1998)

With the intention of promoting their upcoming release of Something Wild, the band opened one of the shows from the symphonic black metal band Dimmu Borgir in late 1997. Their success was such that a representative from the Nuclear Blast label shortly approached them with a contract for a European release, a deal which started on the subsequent year.^{[citation needed]} Something Wild was officially released in November 1997, and for promotional purposes the band recorded a music video of the song "Deadnight Warrior". The video was directed by Mika Lindberg and had a slim budget of €1000. It made use of simple scenery, which consisted essentially of an outdoors location after a snowstorm. The band played for a couple of hours at night, with an average temperature of minus fifteen degrees Celsius.

Although Laiho is very critical of all of the music he has written, he notes that he dislikes Something Wild the most of all of his albums. When recording this album, Laiho had tried to mimic the style of one of his idols, Yngwie Malmsteen, which is why Something Wild is considered one of the most technical albums Children of Bodom have ever produced.

Children of Bodom's first European tour began in February 1998. They played together with bands such as Hypocrisy (at such festivals as Under the Black Sun), The Kovenant and Agathodaimon, but suffered from the absence of Wirman, who was concentrating on finishing his studies.^{[citation needed]} He was replaced by pianist Erna Siikavirta for the duration of the tour.

Months later, the band recorded two new songs, entitled "Towards Dead End" and "Children of Bodom". The latter was included in a compilation by Spinefarm Records, which after being released remained on the top of Finnish charts for eight consecutive weeks.^{[citation needed]} In late August, the band played the song "Forevermore" live for the first time during a show in Russia. This song was later renamed "Downfall"^[6].

Their second European tour occurred in September of that same year, but once more Wirman was not able to perform with them. Laiho's then-girlfriend Kimberly Goss (from Sinergy and formerly of Dimmu Borgir, Ancient and Therion) assumed the keyboards this time. By the end of the tour, Kimberly invited Laiho to join Sinergy, which at the time was still in its early stages.

The second album, Hatebreeder, was recorded between the end of 1998 and the beginning of 1999. It was originally entitled Towards Dead End, but while in studio the members of the band opted for the current title. To create anticipation in Finland, the '"Downfall" single was released two weeks prior to the album's release. It was accompanied by a new music video, once more directed by Mika Lindberg. Hatebreeder ultimately topped the charts in many European countries.

In July 1999, the success of the "Downfall" single and Hatebreeder allowed Children of Bodom to schedule three concerts in Japan with Sinergy and In Flames. During two of these concerts the live album Tokyo Warhearts was recorded, and in it the band managed to seamlessly reproduce and at times improve on their songs, a notable achievement for a band with only two albums recorded previously. Under their request, no overdubs were used on the recording of the concert.

For their next release, Children of Bodom decided to make use of Peter Tägtgren's Abyss studio in Sweden, instead of the Finnish Astia-studio from Anssi Kippo, in which they had recorded all of their previous releases, including the demos from IneartheD. The band wrote eight new songs for this album, and while in the studio decided to include an extra track, which was hastily composed and featured lyrics improvised by Laiho; that track would eventually receive the name of "Kissing the Shadows". The band gave the album the name of Follow the Reaper and recording sessions took place between August and September 2000; the album saw a worldwide release in early 2001. A music video for "Everytime I Die" was recorded by Finnish director Tuukka Temonen shortly after.

In February 2002, Children of Bodom began writing songs for their upcoming album, entitled Hate Crew Deathroll. Recording ensued during the month of August, and the album was released January 2003 in Finland. It remained on the top of the Finnish charts for a total of three weeks and subsequently became the band's first gold album, even though all of their albums eventually reached this status, with Follow the Reaper reaching platinum status.

On January 3, 2003, the Finnish Metal Music Awards were held at Tavastia Club in Helsinki. Voting was open to all the metal fans and was presented through the various media outlets that were working with the event's organizers. Children of Bodom was awarded Finnish Band of the Year.^[7]

Children of Bodom's first world tour began in 2003 and lasted until late 2004. The tour had many sold-out concerts and marked the consolidation of the band in North America, but was also accompanied by an unexpected announcement: Kuoppala decided to quit Children of Bodom for personal reasons right in the middle of the tour without giving previous warning. Griffin's guitarist Kai Nergaard was invited by Laiho to replace Kuoppala, but did not accept the offer.^[8] Thus, Alexi's bandmate from Sinergy, Roope Latvala (founding member of Stone, one of the bands which started the heavy metal movement in Finland) assumed the guitars as a session player, until a more permanent solution could be found. This formation was introduced in Moscow on the 16th of August.

Children of Bodom's debut release is far more melodic death metal than anything they would release later. Although the phrase commonly used to describe them is melodic death, without the harsh vocals delivered by Alexi Laiho they are closer to power or speed metal. This album however is closer to death metal than their others, and there are also tinges of black metal such as on In The Shadows.

This isn't as good as the two that would follow it, Hatebreeder and Follow The Reaper, their sound is less refined and developed, but there are still some great songs. Laiho's rasping vocals fit the music perfectly even though his guitar work isn't as prominent as on later releases, and there is more classical influence here. Red Light In My Eyes part 2 takes some of its tune from Mozart's Symphony no. 25.

The first two tracks are good, but it's the two Red Light In My Eyes songs that really hold your attention. The intro to the first part is great and it contains some parts you can really hum along to, and the second part is no less good, the Mozart tune opens the track and it also contains some memorable parts. As a double act the two songs are great and fit together well, and once the second part ends another of the best songs on the album begins, Lake Bodom.

The fantasy/power metal style beginning draws you in and it contains probably the best guitar solo on the CD, COB's later albums are made up of tracks similar to this one. The Nail contains an intro speech from Nightmare on Elm Street 2 and it's another solid track, the longest here, and Touch Like Angel of Death rounds things off, it's another headbanging frenzy with more classical-inspired keyboards. The album is short in length, but what's here is great, only just behind the next two they would release and worthy of five stars.

This Live CD is perfect in every musical way. The music is so awsome that I crap myself everytime i listen to this CD. The songs are taken from Hatebreeder and Something Wild(the guy who wrote the other review doesnt know what hes talking about because Follow The Reaper wasnt even out when they did this show in Toyko. Great buy. Its very expensive for a CD but its worth the money. I wish i could have gotten it for cheaper but oh well.

Children of Bodom Trashed Lost & Strung Out

Trashed, Lost and Strung Out is a neat little EP that served to whet fans' appetites for Children of Bodom's 2005 album Are You Dead Yet?. In addition to the title track, which was the first single from the album (something about thinking of any COB song as a single in the US strikes me funny), there is the exclusive studio track Knuckleduster. Both songs are representative of the Are You Dead Yet album, which is to say they both rock like the proverbial hurricane.

What's exclusive to this EP, and what makes it worthwhile long after the full album was released, is the presence of two cover songs. The first cover is of the Alice Cooper song Bed of Nails. The second is of Andrew W.K.'s She is Beautiful. These oddball covers help illustrate why Children of Bodom is so often imitated, but is never really duplicated. They can cover two very different songs from two very different eras, neither of which is really a metal song, and give them that signature COB style.

Plus, their obvious appreciation for a wide array of music has helped them to essentially create a whole new style of extreme metal.
The EP also includes the video for the title track as well as some other multimedia content. Given the low price, this EP is a good purchase for all serious Children of Bodom fans.

I've been a Children Of Bodom fan for a long time now. I have all their other albums, but for whatever reason its taken me forever to get this album, their debut. And quite why its taken me this long, I don't know, because this album is just as brilliant as all their other stuff. Children of Bodom really are one of the best metal bands around at the moment, and this proves it perfectly well.

Something Wild is a somewhat rougher album by them. The production is a little rawer, but by no means bad, and the music is definately heavier, faster and somewhat edgier as well. I get the feeling that they tried to return to this sound to some extent on Hatecrew Deathroll, after the catchy, melodic, 80s sound of Follow The Reaper, but this album brimming with much more energy. But don't be fooled into thinking that isn't melodic either. Something Wild is just as full of hooks and melody as Follow The Reaper and Hatebreeder.

For those of you who aren't familiar with Children Of Bodom, they combine Malmsteen-esque neo-classical 80's metal with catchy, even poppy hooks but also with a modern, much heavier and thrashier edge. For those of you who don't like raspy vocals, Children Of Bodom are not really the band for you, though they could also be the band to convert you. Alexi Laiho is, as always, brilliant. His ability as a guitarist is frightening considering his age at this point, and he is definately one of the best lead guitarists in metal today.

I can't really think of much more to say. I still think Follow The Reaper is their best album to date, but this is just as good a place to start with them as any.

I love metal. Ever since I was a freshman in high school when my cousin, a professional violinist who I've always looked up to in terms of music, introduced me to it back in the days. One of the bands that he hooked me up with was Children of Bodom. I'd say this is CoB's best album, but it's a very difficult choice. The music that this band produces is truly amazing, and this album is a perfect highlight of their career.
Each track is its own, no repeating riffs, no dull moments. What I find most amazing is that this band can change the moods of each song many times in a 3-5 minute range. The only band that I think does a better job than CoB is Opeth, but they use an average amount of 10 min per song to do this. This is what makes CoB so intense. They're not the heaviest, or the fastest, or the loudest band. But they are one of the most solid bands I have ever heard in my life. If you like metal, no, if you like rock in general, you would dig Children of Bodom.

Hatebreeder has cemented itself in my top 5 favorite albums largely because of the ultra melodic styling of the leads played by Laiho. The music comes across as heavy and aggressive but there are great melodies over top from the guitar and the keys.

The cover of Aces High is a pretty great "blackened" version of the Maiden favorite. This album represents a style that has started disappearing in more recent Bodom work which still features shred but doesn't have as many complex melodies as this album does. You can find a lot of melodies that are reminiscent of melodies you might find in concert/"classical" music.

No Bodom fan should be without it, any guitar fan should at least listen to it. Memorable tracks include "Silent Night, Bodom Night", "Toward Dead End" (renamed on this re-release "Cowards Dead End"), and "Downfall". Of course if you're one of those that can't get past the screaming, then you're not going to like it anyway. I encourage you to at least give it a shot.

Oh, no! Faceless foreign imitators are NOT doing metal the way it's supposed to be done. What EVER will we do? Fear not, fellow metalheads, for Children of Bodom are back, and they're stronger and more irresistable than ever. And guess what?

They brought audible keyboards this time around! I, for one, after Hate Crew pretty much follows the same style seen on previous albums: awe inspiring guitar work, semi black metal vocals, blazing speed and rhythem keyboards are all in abundance here. The differences between this and previous efforts is that this is more thrash than melodic death and it is much more venomous than before.

COB have always been unique in the melodic death realm for the fact that they always wrote about themes of hatred and vengenance rather than the poetic lyrics usually found in the genre. Hate Crew sees them taking this further than they ever have in the past with such songs as "sixpounder" and "You're Better off Dead". The music is also darker than in the past and follows a more thrashy groove than previous efforts.

Which is where my one problem, and reason for not giving this a 5, is. The keyboards don't fit their new darker sound as well. Many times they'll go into an evil sounding part only to have the keyboards come in and make the whole thing sound hilarious and cheesy. If they continue with the more evil sounding stuff it would definitly be a good idea to not rely on the keyboards so much in the future. I recommend In Flames, Death, Lord Belial, Kalmah, Norther, Leviathan, Emperor and Susperia in addition to this.

listening to this album, couldn't see "Are You Dead Yet?" being without the keyboard solos, some of which are just immaculate. I'm not saying that it's anything groundbreaking, but this album is pushing the limits of its particular sub-genre.

Don't get me wrong now, it's still heavy, very heavy indeed, but it would be tough to clasify this disc as merely thrash or melodic-death. The band's lead vocalist/guitarist, Alexi Laiho, has a much bigger job this time around, for former lead guitarist, Alexander Kuoppala, is no longer with the band. However, as we've come to expect from him in the past, Alexi again delivers, helping Children of Bodom produce, yet again, a near-masterpiece. I will now highlight my favorites :

2. Are You Dead Yet - The title track is almost bass-driven, which is a positive for me. It is also chock-full of floor-rattling howls by Alexi.
3. If You Want Peace ... Prepare For War - Can you say solos? If you can't, this track sure can. Hell, I wouldn't even mind if there weren't vocals in this song.
5. In Your Face - Yes, I know, it may seem a little forced. I thought so too when I first listen to it, but it soon became my favorite on the record.
10. Somebody Put Something In My Drink - A remake of the Ramone's classic, this song is a great closer for me, actually, it'd fit just right anywhere in the album. Nice guitar solo mid-way, followed by a cool modulation.

Children of Bodom Blooddrunk

Finnish thrashers Children of Bodom follow up their last album with what sounds like a sequel of sorts - Blooddrunk. This is not alluding to a second offering of Are You Dead Yet? per say, but the songs are eerily similar in style and lyrical content. You could probably swap songs from one album to the other without much of an evident difference, even taking the song titles into account. Is this a negative? No, but it's not necessarily a positive.

Children of Bodom have arguably slumped in the studio the last couple albums (In Flames is another similar heavy hitter arguable of doing the same), but the results on record depend on your point of view. Do you enjoy something dark and brutal? Or do you enjoy something slightly catchy, but heavy? If you answered the latter, then Blooddrunk is for you.

While the band's sound has changed to some extent, you can still expect the usual sounds from albums of old - double bass drums and keyboards all over the place, Alexi Laiho's technical prowess on guitar, and spine-tingling anthems in general. Children of Bodom carry on to play as intense as hell in songs like "Smile Pretty for the Devil" and "Roadkill Morning," but on the other hand have lessened the pace to allow for manageable head banging in songs like "Done with Everything, Die for Nothing" and the title track "Blooddrunk."

The majority of the album is keyboard-laden, which is no surprise, but not absolutely necessary. Although, the guitars and keyboards do have a few appreciative tangos at times. Keyboards or not, Blooddrunk is a ladder rung above the last album and is a step in the right direction for a true Children of Bodom revival.
